The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) conducted its
fifth Speakers Bureau for 2012 on November 15, 2012 at Villa Alzhun Resort,
Tagbilaran City, Bohol. This Speakers Bureau was done in coordination with DOST
Region 7 led by and Bohol Provincial Science and Technology Center, led by Ms.
Vina R. Antopina.
Academician Christopher C. Bernido of Central Visayan Institute
Foundation encouraged the students to take a career in science for them to
realize the importance of science and technology and to elevate our country’s
global economic status.
Dr. Maria Auxilia Siringan of University of the Philippines, Diliman
shared the possible things that could happen to people experiencing the effect of
bioterrorism. Dr. Siringan said that live microorganisms are possible
bioweapons and can be used for murder, extortion or revenge that can result to crime.
Academician Fabian M. Dayrit of Ateneo de Manila University shared that
in our daily life we encounter nanotechnology, which can be found in laptops,
bicycles, air conditioning units, cellular phones, cosmetics, and clothes.
Academician Gavito C. Trono of University of the Philippines, Diliman
discussed the importance of cultured seaweeds. He said that there are many
varieties of seaweeds that can be consumed by humans. He described seven of
them, including their economic importance.
The said event was hosted by Ms. Guada B. Ramos, Information Officer V
and representative of the NAST Philippines with Mr. Rodel P Cadion. She also promoted
the NAST Awards and its history.
